Our planet provides so much beauty that inspires us to draw and paint. Many artists use their creativity to make artwork that reflects their explorations and adventures in the natural world around them. And that is especially true for my own artwork.
My artwork draws upon the plants and animals of the world that have moved me. From the wild savannah to underneath the ocean waves, animals are particularly fun to paint and draw. Whenever possible, I like to reference my own captured imagery of the these creatures. And I was lucky enough to catch some amazing underwater photos while in Cancun, on the Yucatan in the Gulf of Mexico, snorkeling. Baby sea turtles are everywhere in the month of April, just like a lot of the marine life, because it’s Spring! It’s the arrival of sea turtles to the warm shores of Mexico.

The water in Cancun is crystal clear and warm, making it perfect for spotting fish, eels, crab, and my favorite – turtles. I can’t tell you how excited I was to come across so many happy thriving turtles in one place when on my visit. I snapped about a dozen great shots and thought I’d share them today in honor of Earth Day. And here are some fun sea turtle facts you may not have known.
When you spend time in nature, anywhere where it’s wild and free, you get a real sense of purpose about protecting our environment. I hope my artwork can inspire positive change, which is why I picked Earth Day to reach out.
Earth Day means doing what we can to conserve, protect, and advocate for the resources around us that don’t have a voice.
At my studio we are honoring it by having a LIGHTS OUT period for one hour to conserve energy. That’s right – no electronics used for one full hour today in an effort to conserve electricity for our planet. Many communities do this on Earth Day. It’s such an easy way to conserve energy resources and make a difference for our planet. And it doesn’t cost a dime. In fact, it might save you some.
Will you do an hour of LIGHTS OFF? Would you take your bike or walk, instead of driving? What about re-using some of your materials so you aren’t adding to our waste?
There are literally countless ways of observing and honoring Planet Earth today. I hope you get inspired by these lovely turtles I spent time with and find a way to make a difference in your own part of the world today.

Comment below if you live near sea turtle habitats! I’d love to hear if you’ve had any turtle encounters.
Happy Earth Day to all!
