"Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better thoughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christms-time."
Laura Ingalls Wilder

The tradition of the “ugly Christmas sweater” began in the 1950s. During this time, they were not considered “ugly,” but rather festive and fun. These sweaters were often hand-knit and featured traditional holiday symbols like snowflakes, reindeer, and Christmas trees.

However, the trend really took off in the 1980s, thanks to TV shows and movies. Characters in popular sitcoms would often wear these over-the-top sweaters during holiday episodes. This made them a popular choice for holiday parties and family gatherings.

In the early 2000s, the concept of the “ugly Christmas sweater party” was born. People would search thrift stores and online shops for the most outrageous sweaters they could find. The goal was to outdo each other with the most ridiculous designs.

Today, the ugly Christmas sweater has become a staple of the holiday season. It’s seen as a fun way to celebrate and show off your holiday spirit. So, while the tradition may have started as a simple holiday garment, it has evolved into a beloved part of modern Christmas celebrations.
