Now for the tools I can not live without.

Note: These are my favorite tools that give me flexibility as an artist and that I use to create my work. These are not the only tools out there to create artwork. These are, in my opinion, economical solutions for the artist wanting the flexibility to create anywhere and the artist who wants to create digital mixed media artwork.

1.  Pencil, pen, and paper – The use of these basic stools are understated in their importance, but people still rely on them to sketch their ideas and thoughts. My favorite paper is a hot press watercolor paper or just white card stock. Something that can easily be photographed or scanned. I like to use Black wing pencils and micron pens to highlight the details and shadows in my pieces.

2.  Surface Pro – As a mixed media artist, I use the Surface Pro to scan, sketch and draw my intricate artwork in a digital medium. This works great when I am on the move too. As the Surface Pro is very lightweight and portable, I can easily carry it with me when I am traveling. With this powerful computer, you do not need to invest in an expensive iPad Pro. It has the flexibility and strength to be a true all-in-one device for an artist. The Surface Pro has a great battery life which means that you can work for a long time without the need to charge your device. Its sleek design and portability help it to be a great alternative to the iPad Pro.

3.  Watercolor – The Canson 140lb is one of my go-to design tools for my artwork. Watercolor cold press paper and my Danielle Smith watercolors are my favorite combination. I love to create abstract ideas with watercolor. I use this often as a starting point before bringing it into the computer to create the final piece. This is one reason why my art looks so true to life.

4.  Ooku watercolor brushes – These are amazing brushes and hold color and water so well. I am totally in love with them. Their superior water retention capabilities make me choose them over other watercolor brushes. When I form abstract ideas in my head, I don’t have a specific form but as soon as I get on a canvas and use these brushes, they help me to find the perfect form I was looking for.

5.  Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop – I create all my final pieces using these two highly sophisticated pieces of software. Photoshop is a lifesaver! Seriously, I could not create without them. If you want to remove any blemishes from your art pieces or add more elements to your digital artwork, using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop hand-in-hand can give your art projects a touch of professionalism and a unique look that will resonate with your audience.These are the 5 artist tools I recommend for any newbie artist. There are other alternatives, but in my humble opinion, these tools get the job done just how it was supposed to!
