I find that journaling helps me to be more productive and effective during my day. My life is busy and full of distractions and having a journal keeps me focused. I have discovered many hidden gems of wisdom, laughter and insight during my day or week when I journal. These gems are not all big life lessons that the world needs to know. But they are gems non the less. They are sweet moments of my life that I find when I journal.
So why should you journal?
On reason you should journal is that this is your time. You need time to yourself with a journal to organize, reorganize, plan, create, and to just simply think. Taking time with a journal allows you to renew, heal, and create reserves of energy and peace. Ideally you need to take time and journal everyday. For me this is usually 20 minutes. This is truly “me” time. Remember that no matter what we do, there are only 24 hours in a day, so you can’t create more time. But you can clear some time by reevaluating priorities, perhaps saying “no” more often and practicing smart time management.
Don’t fear the blank page. Don’t let it overwhelm you. Start small. You are not writing Romeo and Juliet. Your goal should be just to write or draw something everyday. Begin anywhere, and forget spelling and punctuation. Privacy is key if you are to write without censor. The most important rule of all is that there are no rules.
This will be your journal, make it unique. Once you have overcome the fear of the blank page, make your journal special. Make it yours. You can buy a nice leather bound or do like me, buy and create a unique, one-of-a-kind journal. I found I love the Moleskin squared journals. They can work for everything I journal daily. For my art journals, I love the blank page Moleskins. I love the plain covers, because I paint and create a piece of art on them.
Yoda says, “Do or do not, there is no try.” I have to disagree with Yoda. In journaling there is try. Just try it. Try writing or drawing – everyday! You may find yourself. You may find you start journaling one way and end up writing or drawing about something completely different. You may have a totally different result or outcome. Expect the unexpected. Enjoy discovering yourself, again. Remember, there is no wrong way to journal
Journal About Everything.
Journaling is not for the weak. The habit of journaling is not easy. It can be so easily set aside. But if you keep up with your journaling it can change and enrich your life. I have found that journaling keeps me focused and creative. It has grown me both personally and professionally. The simple act of writing a few words, sentences, paragraphs or drawing, doodling, creating everyday can have a profound and instant effect on your life for the better.
Wish It. Dream It. Do It.
